Three-day weekend. No plans. The best kind.
So, on to anime, bad books and cracking jaws.
AKIRA
Saw it finally. Was good, but as always with anime I feel slighlty depressed afterwards. It looks gorgeous though and I'm glad I rented it.
Men's trashy novels
I'm surprised again and again by novels geared toward men. I was handed David Balduccis "Last Man Standing" by my boss and opened it at random to see what it was about. I'm never too enthusiastic about novels with badly designed covers (an american flag in this instance) that have the authors name in big block letters, so I was already prejudiced. But reading a scene invloving a woman (typical scared-but-brave!), but I couldn't keep from shaking my head and grinning. This is what a lot of men like to read? Sheesh. I've seen fanfic that was just so-so that is much better than what was right in front of me. But people pay for this, that just blows my mind.
In my head this stuff is as bad as a Danielle Steele or Judith Krantz, but with less of a sense of humor. To be fair the attraction may be in geting caught up on the plot. Maybe I'm supposed to forget about the rest, but I can't see myself spending hours trying to get through scenes that make me giggle in their effort to be taken seriously. Like action movies I guess.
Speaking of badness nothing, and mean nothing can compare to the Left Behind books. Have the fans of these book ever read anything else in their life? Didn't these guys have an editor? This is truly horrible crap. Oh forget it. They've sold tons of these things, novels, if you can call them that, so what do I know?
Please your beaver
Saw an ad in BUST mag for www.newmouthfromthedirtysouth.com GYNOMITE: Fearless, Feminist Porn. If nothing else I like the little beaver drawing holding the, uh, book? magazine? and their "changing the world.... one orgasm at the time" line. I suspect however that their stories are not my cup of tea. Why spends money of porn anyway? There is so much online for free that it makes very little sense to fork over any dough unless you are into some seriously specialized kink. I'm still scratching my head over the only real porn book I've ever purchased "Macho Sluts" by Pat Califa. It was midly titillating but its so obvious Califa is trying to be PC that it gets annoying, and we can all agree that's not sexy. Again, who buys these things? Where are you horny reader? Midwest? San Francisco? Write me and I'll point you to several interesting places that might serve you a lot better than fiction trying to regulate fantasy.
