Sometimes it helps, when the actor is not up to the role. I saw Macbeth with Sean Bean, and it helped to have him running around shirtless with 3 very sexy weirding sisters. It played to his - um - strengths :D - But yeah, most times it's a distraction. The first time I saw Hamlet was on PBS, about 20 yrs ago, with Kevin Kline in a minimalist production that was amazing.
