Welcome to the not-so-new but now exploding front line of literature. There are more than a quarter of a million fan-generated HP stories posted on the Web already, many of them novel-length . . .

While other authors have threatened legal action against wannabe writers who hijack their characters and narratives, Rowling, her publishers, and even Warner Bros, her copyright- coveting movie-makers, have stepped back to allow the fan-fiction community to do as it will, with just a plea (largely ignored) to keep it nice for the kids.

"I think what is particularly telling about the explosion of fan fiction on the Web, in terms of the history of literature, is that this medium supports an approach to characters and stories that is different from most modern literature," Glaubman says.
"For a variety of reasons, it becomes preferable to share and re-use characters and narratives, which was the norm in earlier periods. We don't know where this is heading; we're only at the beginning of it now."
